If you have children in school you are no doubt familiar with endless fundraisers. Seems like every week your kids are bringing home new ways of raising money for school activities. No kids? I bet you still get hit up for these events, don’t you? At work, at home, even as you leave the grocery store, you are asked to buy something to benefit someone. However, if you are like me, you are sick and tired of all the fundraising that is tied to candy, pizza parties, and those mysterious tubs of what appears to be cookie dough. I always politely decline the purchases of these and opt to donate money directly to the cause. I don’t think we should sell junk food to raise money for school activities. Childhood obesity is a growing concern and linking school activities to the pedaling of unhealthy foods sends the wrong message. There is not a shortage of junk food; it’s everywhere, so why use it as a way to raise money for your cause? There are better ways…

Is this a jogging track or a mud run?

Finally, here is a healthy cause and a healthy way to raise money for it. On Friday, March 20th, from 6-8pm, Kuehnle Elementary will be hosting a Color Fun Run to raise money for their jogging track. This jogging track is how Kuehnle does their part to help kids get more activity into their school day. Twice a week, there is a jogging club before school. Sometimes there are more than 200 students gallivanting around before a long day of reading, writing, and ‘rithmatic. It’s a great scene! However, with even just a little rain, this dirt path turns into a quagmire. This leads to cancelled jogging club days and less activity for our kiddos. As you can see in this video, they are in dire need for a surfaced jogging track.

Now is your time to sponsor a healthy cause and an even healthier way to raise money. You can come out on March 20th and participate. The only cost to run is to buy color packets to join in the fun, mess, and exercise. In addition to participating in the Color Run, you can also make a donation. My first grade sons have set up a website to collect donations for this great cause. Please take a moment to visit their site and consider making a pledge. The money goes directly to Kuehnle to fund their track. After all, I am sure you recently bought cookies to benefit Girl Scouts, how about investing in the fitness of our youth this time??!!

Don’t make them angrier by not donating!

As you can see, my sons look pretty intimidating. You don’t want to make them mad by not donating! I usually don’t pressure people much for donations, but this is a cause that is meaningful for all kids, present and future, at Kuehnle Elementary. Thanks for your time and I hope to see you out there for the Color Run. I am sure I will be a prime target for color bombs, so stay tuned for pictures!

Be well,
